Autism: A Portrait of Mothers and Sons

This post is by Kim Mimnaugh, the founder of Autism: A Portrait of Mothers and Sons.

I have an 11-year-old son with autism. After many years of thinking of a way to use my skills as a photographer to express my love for my son, I gathered the courage to photograph other mothers and their sons with autism. I put an ad in my regional (NE ARC) autism support newsletter, asking for mother and son volunteers. When I started photographing in May, I wasn’t sure what I would find or how the photos would take shape.

Four months into the portrait project, I am meeting the most amazing and inspiring women who cherish their kids. They rise to the task of caring for a special needs child everyday. I hope the portraits will change the way the viewer looks at a person with autism, and also see the strong relationship between a mother and son.

I plan on working on the portraits long term. I’m currently looking for moms and sons to photograph and venues (libraries, schools, office buildings, art galleries, etc.) to get the work out to the public. I live in the Boston area. Feel free to contact me through the blog.

this is a wonderful idea. I work in my sons classroom as much as possible (3rd grade). The more kids see us together, the more they see my son as a human being, not a diagnosis/label or “other”. We have a wonderful clinic at the university here (Chico State). I’m sure they would love to be involved in this. Wonder if there would be a way to get local photographers involved. Really love this idea. My best wishes for your project! Hope to hear from you.

Nicole- how much do you volunteer in yr son’s class? My son is in first grade mainstreamed with aide and I am told it would not be good for him to have me there. I agree with you about how others see you in class and the effect it has on their attitude towards yr son. Thanks. Julie

If you are able to travel for this project we live in the beautiful Puerto Rico.

That is great! I am also a photographer, and started taking pictures last year of children with Autism and their families. Its hard for our kids to go to Walmart/Olan Mills and sit still in a room. It was great to see our kids express themselves outdoors with huges smiles on their faces w their families. I wanted to do it full time, however, I went back to school to complete my degree in education so that I will be teaching little ones with special needs next year . I take pictures now, here and there, school and my family have me plenty busy.

I wish you much success in your project, and if you are ever in the Tampa Bay area, pls let me know. YAY!!! for your work.

    Hi Kim!

I think what you’re doing is great. I just moved to Mass and joined NE ARC last month. My 2.9 year old son was diagnosed in April and I’d love to participate in your project with my son.

I am Hispanic and in my culture autism spectrum disorders are a real taboo. Some family members want us to keep his diagnosis a secret, but I am all for showing how much I love my son and to create awareness about the disorder.

Please contact me if interested and keep up the good work!

Would love to be part of this special & amazing project! I’m also a fan of photography & agree that capturing the bond between moms & their children with special needs is best caught on film. A picture is worth 1000 words so they say. Some of the greatest bonding moments between our kids happen with social cues & photographs can show this very vividly. Pls feel free to reach out to us:) thx!

This is an awesome way to expess how all mothers feel. I live in NY but my parents live in Maine. This would be the perfect Chrsitmas gift to my family. I would love a picture of my precious boy. We work so hard for them, that sometimes we miss the important little things they do. My son was not planned and I was told not to have anymore children. I had a difficult pregnancy, but my sunshine was born. I have never once thought of what if I listen to the doctors. He is my inspiration and my drive to be a better person and e is only 3 1/2 years old. All these children have a magical power that embraces you.. Good luck and I hope we meet. Roz

Autism affects girls too. My daughter, Kate, is 7 years old. This is exactly the kind of thing that makes people think that autism ONLY affects boys. You would do well to include 1 girl for every 5 boys that you photograph. And what about the dads? Don’t they count too?

My brilliant 20 yr old son with Aspergers lives with me in Newcastle Australia happy to send a photo!! Anyone on here with younger asperger kids please add me on fb if any questions on coping, we have been through it all and have done really well…, yes there’s always something new pop up but oh so many things have disappeared, we have worked hard together and can now have a laugh at some of the actions he used to do, Mitchell is studying Finance at our local Technology School! My husband also has Aspergers which of course was never diagnosed when he was young, he has always had full time work which always encouraged me to know there was light at the end of the tunnel!! I also have a wonderful daughter who does not have Aspergers studying Bio Medical Science at Uni who has been my back stop!!
    Good Luck with the project!!

Congratualtions for the idea, where can we see the pics? I live in Argentina, I have a 16years old girl with autism, I paint, and she goes to an “Art-Therapy Educative Center” and it´s amazing to see them in photos and videos doing art activities, painting, playing the piano, etc. Once they took photos themselves, an autistic teen to another, and it was great!

My son is 16, has autism, and is non verbal. He has 3 older siblings who adore him. Almost every picture we have of him is of him kissing us with angelical sweetness. When I see a picture of any other child kissing a parent, etc I really can recognize the sweetness of their autism. I would like to see that in the adults?

Kim—–how wonderful! I live in North Attleboro, MA and have a son with Asperger’s (age 16) who takes flying lessons in Mansfield, MA, is looking at colleges to study aviation and hopes to be a commercial pilot after college. My daughter Katherine is 12 and has autism (PDD-NOS) and she is a sports fanatic! She can rattle off lots of stats and info about who got traded where etc, answer questions like “who is the player wearing jersey #_____?”, and she’s overall a pretty good athlete too—wants to play for the WNBA someday….we’ll see!

I would love to participate and have my son and I photographed—I do like the other suggestions about photos with daughters too! I have an art background, am certified to teach art in MA (ceramics) but am always taking photos (but am not a professional)! I never leave without my camera! I have often thought of doing some photography work with some of my friends who are touched by autism in the family and have several friends who have daughters with autism–which is not common. My email is sarahconley1@verizon.net Would love to help in any way!

What a great project! My Charlie’s diagnosis is PDD-NOS, he’s 9 years old. He has made our family SO wonderful and makes us better every day. He is the 3rd child of 5. We live in Utah and have had zero luck finding any support at all. I know people know about this, but it’s surprized me how unwilling people are to help. He attends a charter school which has done so much to keep him in a regular classroom But outside school, there’s not much we’ve been able to find. Very frustrating, so I hope your book will inspire! Good luck, and bravo!

      October 9, 2010 at 9:45 pm

Agreed. Two daughters on the spectrum in my case, and I have ASD myself.

It’s a beautiful and sweet idea, but I don’t see why it can’t be PARENTS AND CHILDREN, not exclusively mothers and sons. My family is a rarity, I admit that, and single fathers are not as common as single mothers, and yet such families certainly exist.

This book has inspired me to create a website just for girls on the spectrum. Every type of family will be welcome! I have a 7 year old daughter named Kate that should not be left out. The faces of autism are not just sons and their courageous mothers. The website should be ready in 2 weeks. Hopefully you will want to be a part of it and share your family’s story

I am a single mom, and have an Autistic son, Sean, 11…I caught it at age 2-3 yrs, and got him the head doctor of the Autistic Dept. at Childrens’ Hospital in Seattle, WA; The Seattle Autism Center just opened 2 Augusts ago, run by Dr. Charles Cowan; Sean is very high functioning; got him into Early Childhood Education for 3 years before, entering 1st grade in a self-contained classroom. He takes Risperdone in the am, and Trazodone in the pm; this I hope is useful information to those parents out there who need help.
