Dr. Ami Klin explains the importance of helping the young child with autism become engaged with the social environment, which increases the learning opportunities that are available to the child. Although our goal is to get children with autism into intervention as soon as possible, it is never too late for an individual with autism to benefit from interventions that focus on increasing social interaction.

Autism’s, “widely acknowledged genetic origins?” Didn’t AS just establish that ASD is at least 50% environmental origins?
I also do not appreciate that AS is promoting Klim’s assertion that, “autism is the most genetic of all developmental disorders.” This is not a true statement and does us all a disservice. I also find offensive Klim’s statement that those w/severe autism have this condition because they did not have early intervention. If only it were that simple! My son received an intensive and very expensive early intervention- and it barely helped him. He has a medical disease.
And then the discussion on eye-tracking!
Dr. Klim’s work focuses on aspergers. I wish that was made clear here. There is a tremendous difference between autism and aspergers, HF autism and autism-autism. Klim characterizes ASD as largely a social deficient. I wish this was my child’s main problem, even 1 of his top 5 problems!
This idea that autism is mainly a heritable social disorder is so dated an inaccurate. Autism has not grown 2,000% over the past 20 yrs because of autism’s “evolutionary value.” If anything autism should be extinguishing itself. 99% of people w/ autism do not marry and have children.
Please Autism Speaks no more dated and unhelpful science. We have the NIH for that. Please focus on the innovative biomedical research and interventions that you have promised your consumers- not more eye gazing discussions.
Behaviorism is not the only answer. It treat children as animals with no thoughts of their own. Some kids are so out of control, it can help them to settle down…but it isn’t for everyone.
